The monetary value of a translation is easy to calculate. We usually work per source word (psw); any respectable translation will cost between 0.05 and 0.10 USD psw, depending on the experience and reputation of the translation expert, the language combination, the subject matter, the complexity of the source text, the deadline, the format and technical requirements, and the certification or legal responsibility.

However, the cost of getting a translation wrong is not easy to calculate. We can never accurately predict factors such as a delay, a misunderstanding, a revision in a contract, an additional round of correspondence, a document that has to be translated again, a client who loses confidence. And in sensitive professional contexts, the consequences can extend considerably further.

So, when choosing a translation provider, the question “How much does it cost?” can easily be parametrized. Numbers on a translation quote are straight-forward and easily comparable.

However, perhaps the most useful question when comparing translation providers is “What will it cost me to get this wrong?”

This is where translation stops being about words and starts becoming about value, responsibility and risk.
